The Apulian Art of Papier-mâché

Meet a papier-mâché master at the 630th Carnival of Putignano

Would you like to be a papier-mâché master for a day? Book one of our suites at San Michele Suite and you will get to visit one of the authentic workshops where Carnival and its masks are born. You will definitely “get your hands dirty”.

Papier-mâché is obtained through the recycling of newspaper sheets which are then shaped using a water and flour goo. Old newspapers, the best raw material for papier-mâché, are saved and donated by local people while it takes volunteers months to create the parade floats. December 26th marks the beginning of the Carnival of Putignano. This is when the holy celebrations in honour of Saint Stephen, the patron saint of the city, start from the Church of Saint Mary – that’s the place where his relics have been enshrined since 1394.

The papier-mâché masters of Putignano are experts in their field but also Carnival enthusiasts who spend days and nights in their workshops to make their dreams come true.
